START VENUE: Lanhydrock House Car Park near Bodmin. Signed from A30, A38 Bodmin to Liskeard, and B3268 off A390 at Lostwithiel.
CAR PARKING: At start venue (£3 all day, National Trust Members Free).
FACILITIES: Cafe and Toilets are available at the start.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Bodmin Parkway train station is less than 1 Km from the route.

From the railway station car park go through large red gate sign posted National Cycle Route 3 / Lanhydrock. After approx 950m the cycle route is sign posted as turning right through another red gate. Join the route here by continuing ahead and picking up the route description from the asterisk (after question 1).

TERRAIN: Minor roads, farmland and woods.


ROUTE DESCRIPTION (updated 25/01/19)

From Exit of main car park turn left on road and follow for approx. 450m passing cricket ground on left. At road junction, cross road & continue ahead on track sign posted Cycle Route / Train. After approx. 50m, bear right through gate following yellow arrow on post. Follow wide stony track for approx. 200m before turning right (just after crossing cycle trail), following yellow arrow on footpath between two trees. Follow path through woods ignoring all turnings. Path starts to descend through woods & at fork bear right following yellow arrow. Continue on path ignoring all turnings to reach gate & road. To the left of the gate is a cycle way sign.

Q1. How far is it to Bodmin?

Turn left on road & after approx. 10m, turn right. Go through gate. Immediately turn right onto tarmac path.

(* If coming from railway station continue straight ahead red gate on your right).

At end of path by Lodge, go through gate & turn left onto road. Pass car park on left & cross Respryn Bridge, (the central arch of which dates from the 15th century). At far side of bridge, turn right through gate taking right hand fork along the bank of the River Fowey. Continue on riverside path to reach wooden Bridge.

Q2. What is the name of the bridge? (On lower side of bridge)

Cross river & turn left following path beside river. Follow path for approx. 350m & as river turns left, bear right & continue on path to reach gate. Go through gate & after approx. 20m, turn left through gate with sign ‘Footpath to Restormel Castle

Follow path between fields to reach wooden gate. Go through gate & continue ahead across next field to reach gateway. Continue ahead, initially on track & then on tarmac lane. Pass water treatment works on left & follow lane to reach road junction. Continue ahead on lane past dead end road sign through gate, to eventually pass between farm buildings and entrance to Restormel Castle. At Footpath sign turn left Restormel Manor

Q3. What is the name of the Cottage in front of you?

Turn right downhill through gate and follow track as it bends round to the left. Ahead over the two bridges (river and rail) to reach wooden gate. Ahead and in 40m turn right on stony track uphill through woods to reach stile/gate and road.

 Turn right on road downhill ignoring minor road junction on left to cross small stone bridge. Continue uphill to reach junction with main road. Cross road WITH CARE and ahead through gap to left of metal railings. Follow downhill taking first right to pass Earl of Chatham PH (dog friendly) on left. Continue to cross level crossing and bridge. At end of bridge turn left passing war memorial on left. Next to the memorial is a large stone with a plaque.

Q4.  In 1280 how many arches did the bridge have?

Follow the road as it bends right through town uphill passing Duchy Coffee on left, to road junction and pedestrian crossing. Cross road and turn right along pavement to reach brown Restormel Castle road sign. Bear left and follow to eventually pass entrance to Restormel Castle on left and reach farm buildings.

Continue on lane with river to right for approx. 1 km through gate, ignoring road on left to reach water treatment works. Continue ahead on track passing through gateway. Continue straight ahead across field to wooden gate. Go through gate & continue ahead on path between fields to reach red wooden gate.

Go through gate & bear left on track uphill. At fork bear left to reach farm track. Turn right, in 10m climb stone steps in wall and ahead into woods. Follow path uphill through woods ignoring all paths merging from right.

Follow path to top of hill & at T-junction with track, turn right. Follow track as it slopes downhill to reach gate. Go through gate & turn right on driveway, bearing left to pass the 17th century gate house.

Q5. How many cones on top of the front wall?

Continue ahead on driveway following direction of arrow to ‘Way Out & Car Park’. Follow driveway to reach road. Straight across road to wide path. Take first path on right to reach car park and the end of the walk.
